Over the last decades the international activity from emerging market firms (EMFs), especially their FDI in developed countries, has undergone rapid growth. China, as one of the largest emerging countries, since 21th century, the internationalization of Chinese firms has attracted scholars’ attention. Some scholars though that the international expansion of Chinese MNCs has some unique Chinese characteristics, others suggest that the determinants of Chinese FDI are similar to those of firms from developed countries. Thus whether the existing theories are sufficient to explain Chinese MNCs’ international expansion to developed countries is still a question.
In order to discuss the motives and strategies in the internationalization process of Chinese MNCs, this thesis uses some case studies. Chinese MNCs prefer to purchase European firms with advanced technologies, influenced brands and excellent R&D. And the acquisitions are under the guidance of China government. Thus, the Chinese government or its national strategies is the most important factor in the internationalization of Chinese MNCs.
