Abstract
The experimental discovery of 2D magnets opens the possibility to exploit their peculiar properties in the realization of van der Waals heterostructures that may show new physical phenomena of both fundamental and technological interest. Some of these new monolayer magnets, including CrI3 and NiI2, have been predicted to show a magnetization dependent band structure: when the magnetization of the layer lies in-plane, the valence band extrema at the center of the Brillouin Zone are degenerate, while this degeneracy is lifted when the magnetization is out-of-plane. This effect can be exploited to engineer van der Waals heterostructures comprising a 2D magnet and a semiconducting monolayer, where the band alignment between the layers depends on the magnetization direction of the magnetic material. In particular, if a band inversion between the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band occurs between the two magnetization directions, the heterostructure might realize an anomalous quantum Hall insulator, also known as Chern insulator, whose topological character can be controlled by an external magnetic field. In an effort to build such heterostructure, 2D materials databases have been screened to find promising monolayer semiconductors to be combined with CrI3 or NiI2, by looking for lattice-matched materials with favorable conduction band mimimum position and energy. The van der Waals heterostructures built with the resulting candidate materials have been studied using density function theory simulations with fully-relativistic pseudopotentials and Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional. Despite all simulated heterostructures should theoretically display the hybridization of the band extrema at the center of the Brillouin Zone, interface effects are dominant in this kind of systems, with the appearance of an interface dipole shifting the energy levels and thus often preventing the closure of the band gap. Among the heterostructures considered, NiI2-CdGaInS4 is the only one resilient to interface effects, displaying the sought band inversion, and therefore is a good candidate to show a switchable Chern number and a controllable topological phase.
