Abstract
Geological heritage has not only a scientific, aesthetic, cultural and touristic value but also an economic one if made accessible through tourism and/or sports activities. For these reasons Geoheritage represents a resource for geoscience, geo-education and geo-tourism. Its fragility and exposure to weathering make its protection and conservation necessary since it contains the “Memory of Earth”, unique and irrecoverable. Representing also a potential induced cheap and source of employment, the Geoheritage needs valorization. As a matter of fact, the geological heritage is an essential subject in the territorial planning activity. In the regional context, it is important to notice the avant-garde of the region of Emilia-Romagna, which has always taken care of its Geoheritage, showing itself operative immediately by starting numerous activities and collaborations for the protection and the valorization of its geological heritage. The main traditional tools used by Parks to spread geological knowledge and to educate to Geodiversity are the classic information boards, illustrative panels, info points, guided tours, etc. and the latest audio guides and/or specific Apps for smartphones. One of the latest innovative strategies is the practice of Earthcaching, founded in 2004 and managed by Geological Society of America (GSA) in collaboration with Geocaching HQ. This activity is constantly explanding and it is been adopted for a few years by several National Geoparks in Germany, particularly by Geopark Bayern-Böhmen that offers currently 23 Earthcaches. A survey conducted in 2016 and addressed to these Geoparks revealed that the most principal issues that lend themselves to Earthcaching concern geology and geomorphology. The present dissertation works in this direction: it has the aim of provide the geological and geomorphological material of Tagliole Valley (Modena Apennines) to the creation of Earthcaches in the territory. The purposes of the present study are also to extend the touristic interest to the medium-lower valley, to introduce Earthcaching and to propose some points of interest which best lend themselves to the creation of one or more Earthcaches. The study consisted of the following stages: the preliminary bibliographic resource about the geographic, geological, geomorphological and touristic aspects of Tagliole Valley, well known for its glacial morphologies; the consultation of existing Geomorphological Maps of the study area; the interpretation of aerial photos and satellite images and the performance of several survey campaigns; the elaboration of the Tagliole Valley Geomorphological Map (1:10.000) in the annex to this dissertation; lastly, the personal ideation and proposal of 5 Earthcaches. Earthcaching shows valid potentialities as an educational tool to Geodiversity and it is thought a modern and innovative activity on which focus to increase and promote sustainable and responsible tourism and to develope the local economy in the territory of Modena.
