Abstract
The purposes of this thesis are two: we want to determine the factors that influence the stability in the finite difference methods used to solve the De Saint Venant equations on HEC-RAS 5.0.3 and we want to create a two-dimensional model of the levee breach or the dam breach of the San Cesario sul Panaro (in Modena, Italy) routing reservoir.
To realize the first purpose we have created a test case where, varying the calculation time interval and the cell size, we observe how the results change.
For the second purpose we have used the information obtained from the test case and we have created our real case of dam breach in the San Cesario sul Panaro routing reservoir. To calibrate the model we used the data recorded along the Panaro river.
With the recorded data of similar events occurring all over the world it was possible to find the value of the parameters necessary to define the levee and dam progression breach.
With the work that we have made it is possible to determine which areas of the province of Modena may be affected by the flood. We also highlighted how certain parameters influence the stability of flood wave propagation patterns on HEC-RAS 2D models.
