Abstract
This thesis deals with the issue of knowledge transfer within internationalized companies and the relationship between the parent company and its subsidiaries. In particular, it is divided into four parts: the first two act as theoretical support for the analysis obtained through case study, which is discussed in the last two chapters.
The first chapter deals with the concept of internationalization, exposing the reasons that drive
a company to internationalize, analysing the characteristics that a market needs to possess in order to be considered "strategically important", the different modes of entry that the company can adopt and the four models of relationship between the parent company and its subsidiaries (multinational, international, global and transnational).
The second chapter, which concludes the theoretical part, focuses on the theme of knowledge, analysing in detail the concept of "Knowledge Management" or the set of activities that the company carries out in order to identify, create, organize and share the knowledge of individuals and of the whole organization. In particular, are analysed the different types of organizational knowledge and the strategies that the company can decide to use in order to manage such knowledge, the processes of creation and acquisition of new knowledge and the factors that mostly influence knowledge transfer such as trust, communication tools and cultural and organizational diversity.
The second part of the paper shows the empirical analysis underlying the thesis, analysing in detail the relationship between the parent company Siti B&T and its foreign units.
In fact, the third chapter deals with the main characteristics of the selected company, showing in detail the products and services offered, the reasons that have pushed it to internationalize, the methods of entry selected for each market covered, the performances obtained in the domestic and international market and the strategies adopted to achieve a position of competitive advantage over competitors. Then, it is described the questionnaire administered to the supervisor of foreign subsidiaries operating at the parent company and used to obtain information on the relationship between the parent company and the Chinese (productive and commercial) and Spanish (commercial) subsidiaries and on how they manage knowledge transfer within the Group.
Finally, in the fourth chapter, are illustrated the results obtained through the empirical analysis. Through the interview it has been found that Siti B&T is a company that has grown over time, obtaining a position of competitive advantage, thanks to the ability to offer, on the domestic and international markets, products that are innovative, of high quality and oriented towards sustainable development. In fact, particular importance is given to issues such as energy efficiency and reduction of production costs. Contacts between the parent company and its subsidiaries occur frequently, allowing the parent company to obtain not only financial and economic data but also information about customers and competitors and possible opportunities and threats in the covered markets. This has allowed the company to create lasting and trustful relationships with its subsidiaries, overcoming those conflicts caused by cultural and linguistic differences.
