Abstract
This thesis is addressed to describe the study carried out in the field of collaboration and information exchange between small organizations (companies and other businesses) possibly belonging to different sectors and located in different regions. The ultimate challenge is providing the intended organizations with easy and cheap web-based services enabling them to behave actively in the global electronic market by overcoming the present technological, cultural and linguistic barriers.
This thesis is subdivided into three main sections:
1. Autonomic management of networked small factories
This section describes the complex behavior of a small factory in a business ecosystem, time by time leader or supplier (or both) in one or more supply chains. A new operational environment, specifically addressed to assure fast reaction to customer orders, has been developed together with its supporting suite of software services and applications. The autonomic approach enables the intended networked small factories to perform distributed planning, individual scheduling and exception handling with no human intervention at run time, while every network member it put in the condition to customise at design time its behaviour with respect to the network.
2. Document exchange in logistics
This section aims at showing the techniques that have been studied and developed to facilitate document exchange between collaborating companies in the logistic and transport field. It includes the process of construction and use of a multilingual Logistic Domain Ontology and a suite of software tools for format conversion and contents transformation of the exchanged logistic documents, and the mechanism to automatically import/export them from/to legacy systems. The ultimate aim is enabling the actors of the logistic chains, especially SMEs, to collaborate with each having overcome the interoperability and multilingual problem.
3. Adoption of RFID technology by SME
The last section is addressed to study and experimenting the conditions for a massive adoption of the RFID technology by wide SME communities for identifying and tracking the products on which they perform successive working stages or move to each other. As a by-product, this is intended to create new business opportunities for innovative RFID solution providers. Within this section two interesting pilot case are described, respectively coming from the European project RFID-ROI-SME and from the regional project E-FASHION. These two pilot cases provide the evidence of the tangible benefits the RFID technology can bring to different sectors and operational conditions.
