Abstract
The theme we intend to address in this paper, Patient Experience Design, can be understood as the outcome of a long evolutionary path, both theoretical and practical, which started from the concept of Experience Economy, and then took shape and substance in the specific field of healthcare, also on the basis of conceptualisations, so to speak intermediate, such as those of User Experience, Human Computer Interface and User Experience Design.
It seems evident that for a full understanding of the subject matter and the reasons underlying its increased importance, not only is a preliminary analysis of the various concepts that constitute its theoretical foundations required, but also the framing of the reference context and the dynamics that have characterised it over the last few years, including the most recent ones.
More specifically, since we are called to investigate a topic that concerns the world of healthcare services provided for the protection of public health and, in particular, the management of relations with patients and the possible improvements that can be achieved in this specific field, as it has happened in many other sectors, through the use of new technologies and the adoption of an approach essentially focused on users and their user experience, it seems inevitable, in light of the objectives underlying this work, to recall, albeit briefly, what has happened since the early 2020s, especially highlighting the most relevant implications.
Reflecting on the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic and on its most likely short, medium and long-term consequences, it is impossible to overlook the fact that these consequences, by directly involving healthcare systems and giving a strong acceleration to the development, adoption and increasingly widespread diffusion of telemedicine and teleassistance solutions and, more in general, to the remote provision of services, end up involving also the issue we are interested in, i.e. the management, mediated and optimised through the use of new technologies, of the relationships with patients.
For the reasons outlined above, this paper will initially describe the various concepts of interest, i.e. what, according to the literature, is meant by Experience Economy, User Experience, Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Experience Centered Design and User Experience Design, and will then go on to discuss the merits of remote healthcare services, their various articulations, specificities and limitations, and conclude by focusing on Patient Experience Design.
