Abstract
For the past few years, climate change has become an issue on the European and international political agenda; public resources are not sufficient to counter and mitigate climate change, for this Sustainable Finance is directing financial flows toward ESG investments. Green bonds are the main financial instrument used by Sustainable Finance to meet European and international climate commitments; they are debt instruments used exclusively to finance or refinance, in whole or in part, new or pre-existing environmental projects aimed at countering and mitigating climate change. Since 2007, the green bond market has grown exponentially, achieving large volumes and diversifying issuers. However, such an instrument may incur the risk of greenwashing. After explaining the main characteristics of green bonds and market trends, the paper analyzes the instrument's profitability and the possible presence of greenium. Finally, the paper examines the green bonds of two Italian listed companies in the multiutility sector: Iren and Hera.
