James, The Confessions of Nat Turner di William Styron e, infine, The Heroic Slave di Frederick Douglass.

Abstract
This thesis focuses on slavery and revolt, making reference to four literary works, taken from English and American literature, where the main character is a rebellious slave. The following document is divided into two sections connected between them: the first deals mainly with history and it serves to open the second one, more analytical. The chosen texts are set between the XVII and the XIX century, starting from Oroonoko; or The Royal Slave, by Aphra Behn, followed by The Black Jacobins: Toussaint L’Ouverture and the San Domingo Revolution by C.L.R. James, The Confessions of Nat Turner by William Styron and, last but not least, The Heroic Slave by Frederick Douglass. The analysis will be helpful to highlight some differences and similarities, emphasizing on the heroism of the characters. The different publication date of the works will give a bigger picture on slavery, showing how this phenomenon changed through the centuries.
Finally, considered the many possibilities in the interpretation of the texts and the rich bibliography, a careful selection has been necessary, nonetheless it provides several causes for reflection on a quite controversial subject.
