Abstract
During the first half of the last century, the idea that businesses bear not only responsibilities towards their shareholders, but also towards society at large attracted the attention of scholars and managers alike. The term “corporate social responsibility” (CSR) appeared for the first time in 1953 in scientific literature. Nowadays, CSR is a worldwide expectation, even though it is still far from being settled conceptually in a clear and unique way. This study presents a corpus-based discourse analysis of the environmental sections of the CSR disclosures made by 15 freight-forwarding companies. The corpus includes disclosures made by the companies with the highest gross revenue in the fiscal year 2017 according to the Armstrong & Associates, INC’s Top 25 Global Freight Forwarders List.
The introductory chapter aims at giving an appropriate definition of CSR in relation to the major unsettled issues revolving around this concept. To this purpose, the main current academic theories on CSR, i.e. instrumental theories, political theories, integral theories and ethical theories, are introduced. The last section of the chapter deals with the specific case of “Logistics Social Responsibility (LSR)”.
The second chapter explores how businesses report on their CSR performance. In this regard, some light is shed on how the practice of CSR reporting (also called sustainability reporting or corporate social disclosure) is perceived all around the world, both within and outside businesses. Accordingly, the significance of mandatory reporting provisions and voluntary standards and guidelines on CSR reporting are discussed. Afterwards, a description of some overall features of the main CSR disclosure types (i.e. corporate annual reports, stand-alone CSR reports and CSR disclosures on corporate websites) and of CSR discourse moves the focus on to the linguistic dimension.
The third chapter describes the method chosen for the empirical research analysis. Besides pointing out the way in which the corpus under study has been built, the main characteristics of corpus linguistics (CL), critical discourse analysis (CDA) and corpus-based discourse analysis are explored. The last chapter reports the findings of the linguistic analysis. More specifically, it shows how the 15 freight-forwarding firms under scrutiny use discursive strategies not only to justify their environmental impact, but also to gain a competitive advantage.
