Abstract
This thesis explores the complex nature of humor and its translation, through a case study of the American sitcom The Office. First, the literature review chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the history of humor studies and various theories that have been proposed over time. Theories related to superiority, release, incongruity, and script-based semantic theories are discussed.
Furthermore, the study explores the cultural aspects of humor and the linked challenges posed to translators and adapters. Conveying humor across cultural and linguistic boundaries, in the context of a globalized media landscape dominated by American content, entails navigating the diverse backgrounds and sensibilities of audiences.
Additionally, this thesis delves into key aspects of audiovisual translation, drawing from authors who have contributed to the development of strategies in this field.
In the following chapter, a number of selected scenes from the sitcom is analyzed. The aims is to identify some of the techniques used in the construction of humor as well as to reveal some of the strategies adopted in the translation for the Italian audience, both in the dubbing and in the subtitling. Finally, the analysis demonstrates that successful humor translation requires not only linguistic proficiency but also a profound understanding of cultural nuances. The thesis concludes that a balance between fidelity to the source and adaptation to the target culture is essential for preserving the comedic experience across borders. Ultimately, the exploration of humor in The Office sheds light on the nuanced dynamics involved in humor translation.
