Abstract
This dissertation wants to analyse how issues concerning women's inclusion are dealt with in the pages of the Corporate Social Responsibility reports of several major companies and financial institutions. Consequently, this also entails a series of considerations on the corporate policies implemented in favour of women. Therefore, the preliminary linguistic analysis will be included in a broader field of research. First and foremost, a review of the literature regarding the early evidence of CSR reports, its emergence and structure is required. Furthermore, in order to better understand the phenomenon, research is devoted to corporate communication so as to place these documents in this scenario. The core of the work is the creation of a corpus collecting the various CSRs and the subsequent analysis performed with the help of the AntConc software. In order to carry out the present study, the following three industrial sectors are selected: the financial sector with the analysis of reports issued by the world's largest banks, the fashion sector with international brands and their reports and the automotive-mechanical sector where documents published by major car manufacturers were taken into account. These specific sectors are chosen because they have long been associated with gender stereotypes. In particular, the automotive-mechanical sector is traditionally regarded as a predominantly male-dominated sector, on the other hand, the fashion sector has always been perceived as a female prerogative. Finally, the banking sector is selected because it is assumed to be a neutral sector where gap is narrower. Although by making this choice there seems to be the tendency to propagate these stereotypes, this selection is purely dictated by a desire to see how companies operating in these sectors discuss their corporate policies towards women with the aim of highlighting any similarities and differences. A linguistic analysis aimed at identifying the most recurrent standard structures or phraseology to address certain discourses is performed. Moreover, a multimodal analysis is necessary in order to discover whether purely textual communication is reinforced by other resources and the reasons behind this choice.
