Abstract
ABSTRACT
In the past few years, colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) belonging to the II-V groups of elements have received lots of attention due to their interesting and tuneable features as semiconductors. In particular, the position of the conduction band in Cd3P2 NCs can be tuned more easily than that of the valence band, which makes Cd3P2 an ideal alternative material for photovoltaics. The aim of this research was the synthesis of Cd3P2 and also CdCl2 NCs in the shape of 2D nanoplatelets (2D-NPLs) using wet-chemical methods by optimizing the nature of precursors and the synthetic conditions, in alternative to the reported methods applying dangerous reagents as the flammable metallic sodium and yellow phosphorous. In this project, lithium phosphide was used as P precursor, obtained by reaction of different phosphines with lithium triethylborohydride (Super-Hydride), while CdCl2 and Cd(AcO)2 (AcO = CH3COO-) dissolved in alkyl amines were applied as Cd precursor. Reaction temperatures and times were modulated when mixing P and Cd precursors, and UV-Vis, TEM, HRTEM, STEM, EDX, element-mapping and XPS were used to determine the morphology, structure and composition of the obtained nanoparticles. After several attempts, CdCl2 2D-NPLs of about 50 nm length and 30 nm width could be successfully synthesized, as confirmed by TEM, HRTEM and element mapping, by controlling the synthetic parameters and molar ratio of precursors, where the phosphorous did not participate. On the other hand, only spherical Cd3P2 dots from 2 to 10 nm diameter were obtained, which suggest the need of further attention for the synthesis of NPLs of this material. Nevertheless, this last result can be considered as a safer and alternative synthetic path for Cd3P2 NCs.
