La presente tesi nasce dalla mia esperienza di stage presso un ambulatorio di fisioterapia, durante la quale mi sono occupata della traduzione di testi medici di divulgazione dall’italiano allo spagnolo pubblicati e reperibili sul sito web Fisioterapiaparatodos.
The main idea of the thesis comes from my internship experience at a physiotherapy clinic, during which I translated medical disclosure texts from Italian into Spanish that are published and available on the website Fisioterapiaparatodos. The goal of the work is the analysis about the decisions of the translation process and the verification of the textual characteristics of the medical language. Namely, the objective is to provide an analysis of the translations performed in order to verify whether the peculiarities exposed in the literature can be found both in concrete and translated medical texts. The thesis consists of three chapters, the first is the theoretical part, which deals with specialized languages, and in particular with the technical-scientific branch as a general framework of the medical language. The second chapter is entirely dedicated to analysis of the medical language that can be defined as a subsystem of the general language but that differs from it and from other specialized languages for some characteristics, in particular for the selection and use of certain tools on the lexical, morph- syntactic and textual level, although most of the scholars who have dealt with this issue state that the most distinctive feature is the lexicon. The third and final chapter, which is the focus of this paper, has the objective of analysing the corpus that, as already mentioned, is composed of medical texts that have been translated from Italian into Spanish by the author of this thesis. The goal of the analysis is to justify the translation choices of the most problematic passages considered during the translation process, it also aims to provide practical examples that can demonstrate and prove the presence of the typical characteristics of this type of special language. The paper concludes with considerations relating to the entire work, which serve as an overall view of the achieved objectives.
