Abstract
My thesis focuses on the analysis of several websites pertaining to the world of tourism. I have chosen to examine a range of websites belonging to different countries in the world, and specifically, the analyzed websites are the ones promoted and created by the official national institutions for tourism. The countries under scrutiny were chosen on the basis of their different cultural background, in order to have an overview of the different strategies which could be adopted to deliver a specific kind of message. Another key component in the choice of the countries: the selected nations do not have English as their native language, and the analysis has been carried out considering the English version of the tourist websites realized by those countries. So, my thesis wants to provide an analysis which is both cultural and linguistic, and the main aim of this work is to see whether the cultural features of a certain population may influence the foreign language used in such a context, and furthermore whether the type of language of these tourist websites can be efficient enough, considering all the potential visitors that might take a look at a website and the growing phenomenon of globalization, which is reducing the distances and providing common ground for competent communication.
Before focusing on the analysis, my thesis investigates how communication practices can be successful. Then, my work deals with the notion of culture and the implications that this word carries. Since this dissertation tries to ascertain whether or not a certain country may display some of its cultural components in the creation of a message, I have decided to provide a survey of the theories of famous scholars and academics such as Hall, Hofstede and Trompenaars. Another chapter is oriented to some considerations on how the use of the modern means of communication is substantially shaping our world in a way which has never been seen before.
The conclusions of my dissertation show by means of websites and considering the audience to whom the message is delivered, the institutions try, more or less in the same way, to provide a “neutral” message, or better, they use similar strategies in order to encourage people to benefit from a specific product or service, even if every country has its own characteristics anyway. The role of the cultural peculiarities is backgrounded, and greater space is given to the language competence and to the marketing strategies in order to reach the vast majority of potential customers.
