Riassunto analitico
In this thesis, novel class discovery techniques have been exploited to analyze satellite images, where novelty detection means finding new data that the machine learning system is unaware of during training. Novelty detection is a fundamental task to classify unsupervised data and identify data containing unknown information when the model was trained. An autoencoder was designed, using ResNet18 as a skeleton, which goal is to reconstruct images representing a certain subject with an error as low as possible. Then, during the test stage, images with also different subjects are fed to the autoencoder, and their reconstruction error is compared to a threshold. Thus, If the error is higher, the autoencoder recognizes them as "new". Finally, the new images are divided into clusters, and, by comparing the clusterization to their ground-truth labels, an accuracy score is computed.
